⭕ Not yet published MATCH PREVIEWRalf Rangnick made an impressive start to his tenure as Man United interim head coach, going unbeaten across five matches, but the German suffered his first defeat at the helm on Monday, as Wolverhampton Wanderers recorded a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in the Premier League to leave the hosts seventh in the table.
There has since been talk of unrest in the dressing room, and it will be fascinating to see what type of response there is from the 20-time English champions in the FA Cup on Monday night.
This competition is currently third on the team’s list of priorities this season, but it arguably represents their best chance to win the trophy, with the Premier League title unreachable, while the strength of the teams left in the Champions League will make it tough for an inconsistent Man United to challenge.
As mentioned, the Red Devils have won the FA Cup on 12 occasions, with their last success coming back in 2016, overcoming Crystal Palace in the final, while they lost in the quarter-finals to Leicester City last season and Chelsea in the semi-finals of the 2019-20 campaign.
Man United are actually preparing for a double-header against Villa, as the two sides will also meet in the Premier League on January 15, while a busy period will also see Rangnick’s side face Brentford and West Ham United in the league on January 19 and January 22 respectively.
Preview: Man Utd vs. Aston Villa – prediction, team news, lineups
Villa, meanwhile, will enter Monday’s contest off the back of successive Premier League defeats to Chelsea and Brentford, which has left them 13th in the division on 22 points.
The visitors, as mentioned, have won the FA Cup on seven previous occasions, making them the joint-fourth most successful team in the history of the competition alongside Liverpool.
Villa have not lifted the trophy since 1957, when they beat Man United in the final, but head coach Steven Gerrard will certainly have his side fired-up to triumph at Old Trafford on Monday evening.
The seven-time English champions have also shown their intent by securing the signing of Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona, but the Brazil international is not expected to be involved in Monday’s match, with his debut potentially coming in the league fixture between the two teams next Saturday.
Villa have already beaten Man United at Old Trafford this season, running out 1-0 winners in the Premier League back in September, but the Red Devils have an impressive recent record against their opponents on Monday, winning 14 of their last 19 meetings in all competitions.

TEAM NEWSMan United will again be without the services of Paul Pogba through injury, while Anthony Martial will not be considered for selection among the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future; Eric Bailly is also out, having linked up with Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Victor Lindelof is back after recovering from COVID-19 and should start, but club captain Harry Maguire is still struggling with injury, so Phil Jones could be in line for another appearance at the heart of the defence, having impressed against Wolves in the league last time out.
Rangnick has vowed to select a strong team on Monday, but there is likely to be a start for Dean Henderson between the sticks, while Diogo Dalot, Fred, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes could all come into the team following the league game with Wolves.
Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw are both suspended for the Premier League clash between the two teams next weekend, so the pair are expected to be included in the XI here.
As for Villa, Gerrard has revealed that both Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings will be available for selection, while Kortney Hause should overcome a knock to make the squad.
Marvelous Nakamba and Leon Bailey will miss the contest through injury, while Ashley Young is a major doubt to face his former club; Coutinho is also unlikely to be involved for his new club.
Trezeguet and Bertrand Traore are also absent due to their involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations, but Gerrard still has plenty of options in the forward areas, and a strong side could see Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia feature alongside Watkins in a front three.
Manchester United possible starting lineup:
Henderson; Dalot, Lindelof, Jones, Shaw; Fred, McTominay; Fernandes, Sancho; Ronaldo, Rashford
Aston Villa possible starting lineup:
Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Ramsey, Luiz, McGinn; Buendia, Watkins, Ings

MATCH PREVIEWMorocco enjoyed a sensational qualifying journey where they finished at the summit of Group E to secure smooth entry into the group stages of the tournament. The Atlas Lions were one of eight sides to go unbeaten in the qualifiers, winning four and drawing two to amass 14 points, five points ahead of runners-up Mauritania. Morocco head into Monday’s game on the back of a quarter-final exit from the Arab Cup as they were beaten on penalties by eventual winners Algeria following a 2-2 draw after extra time. Prior to that, Vahid Halilhodzic’s men tasted competitive defeat in July 2019, when they were beaten by Benin on penalties in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations — a run of 22 games in which they won 19 and draw three. Morocco will now look to make up for their Arab Cup woes and secure the continental crown, and three points against fellow group favourites Ghana will be a dream start for the one-time African champion. Ghana, on the other hand, head into Cameroon as the third-most successful nation at the tournament, claiming the Africa Cup of Nations title on four different occasions. However, the Black Stars last conquered the continent four decades ago, when they saw off host nation Libya on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time back in 1982. While they have made it to three different finals since then, they have fallen short on each occasion, with their most recent shortcoming being in 2015, when they lost on penalties at the hands of Ivory Coast. Ghana secured their place in this year’s edition of the tournament following an impressive qualifying run where they won four, drew one and lost one to collect 13 points from six games and finish top of Group C. Milovan Rajevac’s side head into Monday’s game fresh off the back of a 3-0 defeat against reigning African champions Algeria when the sides met in Qatar in a pre-AFCON warm-up friendly. Twenty-year-old Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, who has enjoyed an impressive debut season with Spanish giants Barcelona, has also been handed his first senior call-up by the Bosnian manager. However, notable absentees from the Morocco camp include Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech, who has been out of the team since June 2021, and Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui, who misses out through injury. Ghana, on the other hand, have called up 30 players for the continental tournament, including the Premier League trio of Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey and Jordan Ayew. The Crystal Palace forward is currently 10th on the Black Stars’ all-time appearance list with 73 appearances to his name and is in line to equal Kwadwo Asamoah’s record of 74. Rajevac has also handed debut call-ups to a few home-based players, including David Abagna and Maxwell Abbey Quaye, who enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Ghanaian top flight. | . MARCH PREVIEWComoros will grace the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time ever in their short history on Monday after securing a second-placed finish in Group G of the qualifiers.
Les Coelecantes, who finished runners-up to Egypt, won two, drew three and lost one of their six qualification games to collect nine points and edge out third-placed Kenya by two points.
Comoros were last in action back in September when they steamrollered Seychelles 7-1 in a friendly fixture at the Stade Omnisports de Malouzini to end their three-game winless run.
As they prepare for their first-ever game on the biggest stage in the continent, Amir Abdou’s men will set their sights on upsetting a Gabon side who are 43 places ahead in the latest FIFA World rankings, before going up against African giants Morocco and Ghana.
Gabon, on the other hand, secured their place in the Africa Cup of Nations as they finished runners-up in Group D of the qualifiers, only behind group winners Gambia on goal difference.
Patrice Neveu’s men, who won three, drew one and lost two of their six qualification games, finished level on 10 points with the Scorpions and one above third-placed Congo DR.
Gabon have managed just two wins from six competitive games since then, which has seen them miss out on a place in the playoffs for the 2022 World Cup after finishing seven points behind Group F winners Egypt.
The Brazilians head into Monday’s game fresh off the back of a 1-1 draw with Mauritania in a warm-up friendly match on January 4, when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Pape Ibnou Ba scored for either side to force a share of the spoils.
Having missed out on a place in the 2019 edition, Gabon will be desperate to make their mark in Cameroon and three points in this weekend’s opener will undoubtedly serve as a morale boost ahead of their final two group stage games.

TEAM NEWSAbdou has named a 28-man squad for the tournament, including Ajaccio’s defensive duo of Chaker Alhadhur and Mohamed Youssouf, Auxerre midfielder Iyad Mohamed and Yacine Bourhane, who turns out for Go Ahead Eagles in the Eredivisie.
Guingamp midfielder Youssouf M’Changama holds the Comoros all-time appearance record with 44 appearances and we expect the 31-year-old to handle business at the centre of the park.
Further up the pitch, Red Star Belgrade forward El Fardou Ben Nabouhane, who currently sits at the summit of the nation’s all-time scoring chart with 15 goals in 28 appearances, should spearhead the attack once again.
Meanwhile, Gabon head into the tournament with a 30-man squad, including the Premier League duo of Aubameyang and Brighton and Hove Albion forward Ulrick Eneme Ella.
However, the out-of-favour Arsenal man, who is the most prolific goalscorer in the nation’s history with 29 goals in 77 games, will miss Monday’s game after recently testing positive for COVID-19.
In his absence, several players will push for starting roles in Neveu’s preferred two-man attack, including the likes of Ella, Jim Allevinah, Axel Meye and Saint-Etienne forward Denis Bouanga.
Comoros possible starting lineup:
Ahamada; Abdallah, Abdou, Zahary, Youssouf; Mattoir, Bourhane, Abdullah, Selemani; M’Changama, Mogni
Gabon possible starting lineup:
Amonome; Palun, Manga, Oyono, Sambissa; Lemina, Poko, Ngouali, Autchanga; Allevinah, Bouanga
