 Countries suffering Covid outbreaks will have to play their Africa Cup of Nations matches even if they have only 11 players available.

New guidelines from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) state matches will still go ahead even if none of the 11 players is a goalkeeper.

Any nation unable to fulfil a fixture will forfeit the game 2-0.

The guidance has been issued after several nations reported Covid cases before the tournament starts on Sunday.

Caf said that in “exceptional cases” the tournament’s organising committee “will take the appropriate decision”.

On Friday Egypt delayed their departure for the tournament, which is taking place in Cameroon, and were forced to cancel training after coronavirus cases were reported in their camp.

The Pharaohs, who have won the competition a record seven times, eventually flew to Cameroon on Saturday.

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was among two players to test positive in the Gabon squad on Thursday.

Guinea were forced to leave behind defender Mikael Dyrestam, midfielder Morlaye Sylla and striker Seydouba Soumah at their training base in Rwanda.

Cape Verde and debutants Gambia were hit by several positive tests last week, while Tunisia have also reported cases from their pre-tournament camp.

The Nations Cup starts on Sunday and Egypt will face Nigeria in their first Group D match on Tuesday (16:00 GMT) – a game which will be televised by the BBC in the UK.

Joe Ironside scored the winner as League One Cambridge secured a huge FA Cup upset by beating Premier League Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The striker, who grew up idolising Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, turned in the winner from close range 11 minutes into the second half.

It proved a miserable Newcastle debut for Kieran Trippier, the defender signed from Atletico Madrid on Friday.

Goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov was superb as Cambridge saw out the win.

Mitov made a stunning stoppage-time save from Joelinton in as 5,000 visiting fans celebrated.

Those visiting supporters, high up behind the goal, were rewarded for their long journey north with a battling performance.

Though Mitov kept them in the game for long spells in the first half, they caused problems on the counter attack and defended superbly as the game went on.

Newcastle, without the injured Callum Wilson, looked devoid of ideas as a miserable campaign continued.

For the home support, it was meant to be a day of celebration following the arrival of new signing Trippier – but instead they fell to defeat, and remain with only one win to their name in all competitions this season.

Roared on by a near-sellout crowd, the hosts asserted themselves by dominating possession and pressing high early on. But Cambridge had a sight of goal within five minutes, when Adam May drifted into the box and struck over the bar.

Allan Saint-Maximin was heavily involved for Newcastle, who took just under 20 minutes to create an opportunity. The Frenchman met Jacob Murphy’s cross at the back post, but couldn’t keep his header on target.

Moments later, Saint-Maximin went close again as Newcastle began to turn the screw. This time, he couldn’t guide Joelinton’s scuffed shot goalwards, before feeding Murphy, who forced Mitov into a smart save.

Mitov was alert to deny Saint-Maximin and Murphy again, while Fabian Schar put the ball in the net for the hosts, only to be called offside. Murphy then had a shot tipped on to the bar just before half time.

Murphy thought he’d opened the scoring for Newcastle six minutes into the second half, but like Schar, he was denied by an offside flag.

Cambridge took the lead five minutes later through Ironside – a boyhood Sheffield United fan who grew up with Shearer as his hero.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka appeared to have smothered the danger as the visitors threatened his goal, but was then robbed of the ball and, after Schar failed to clear, Middlesbrough-born Ironside tapped home from close range – with the goal standing after a VAR check for a possible offside.

To sum up his heroic day, Mitov made a stunning save from Joelinton in stoppage time to clinch the win for the lower league side.

‘Nothing to lose’ – Cambridge deserve victory

Cambridge came into this game winless since early December and 16th in League One, but it was their supporters dancing into the Tyneside evening as they left the stadium.

For long spells, as could be expected, they had their backs against the wall, but showed clear organisation whenever they went forward. The tone was set with May’s effort, but they knew how to put pressure on Newcastle’s porous defence.

Ironside was a threat all afternoon, as was Harvey Knibbs, who gave stand-in left back Matt Ritchie a torrid time after coming back into the side for this game.

Mark Bonner, a 36-year-old who never played professionally, took over as Cambridge manager, initially as caretaker, in January 2020 and guided them to promotion from League Two last season.

Victory over a Premier League team, particularly one with the long-term vision of Newcastle, will certainly live in the memory for him and the club, who were in the National League as recently as 2014.

There was tactical organisation, defensive structure and a little bit of luck, but Cambridge had a “nothing to lose” mentality and it paid off in the end.

Newcastle’s striker woes laid bare

Much of the transfer talk on Tyneside has centred around defenders, but Callum Wilson’s injury against Manchester United last month left a gaping hole in attack.

The repercussions of that were patently evident. Eddie Howe’s men created chances and played with good urgency, particularly in the first half, but seriously lacked a cutting edge when it mattered.

Mitov may have thwarted them on a number of occasions, but there was a lack of presence in the final third. Saint-Maximin, while threating as usual, came wide to get more of the ball, and it only became easier for Cambridge after they went a goal up.

It is no secret that Newcastle will be busy this month, but without another striker, it could be trouble in May.
